His journey with skis on his feet led from the Krkonoše Mountains to the Velhory Mountains. Zdeněk Hák, also known as Háček, is one of the most important figures in Czech mountaineering and ski mountaineering. Born on January 11, 1980, he started as a downhill skier, but as he says, “it was more out of compulsion.” He is said to be the only one who beat Ondra Banka, unfortunately only in his junior years. Then he discovered that his somatotype was not exactly ideal for an alpine skier, and that is probably why he started looking into ski alps. For a few years, he also joined the national ski mountaineering team, but he became most famous for his descents of high mountains. For example, he is the only Czech who has skied down the highest peak of the Hindukúš Nošak mountain range (7,492 m).

Háček is also the holder of the most prestigious mountaineering award, the Piolet d’Or (the so-called Golden Ice Axe). He won it in 2018 and 2020. The first time for the first ascent of the eight-thousander Gasherbrum I, the second time for the first ascent of Nepal’s Chamlang (7321 m). His other notable ascents include the first ascent of Kangchung Shar in the Himalayas in 2021 and ascents of Ama Dablam Kangchung in Nepal.
