“Beyond the polar circle, is it truly dark all winter?“ Tromsø: 69° North, 350km north of the Arctic Circle, experiences no sunrise between November 27 and January 15. What is life like when the sun hides for 45 days? How intense is the darkness? How does this period impact the daily lives of the locals? What is the experience of skiing, ice climbing or surfing in twilight and darkness? What’s the beauty of the sun’s low season?
Although there is no sunrise or sunset, the magic light, the vibrant colors of the sky, the glistening snow outside, and the cozy ambiance indoors create an enchanting atmosphere. Locals often describe these weeks as their favorite time of the year.
Former pro skier and sports psychologist Caja Schöpf embarks on journey to the north. A journey to experience the polar night, meet fascinating individuals, and understand their viewpoints on what is widely perceived as an incredibly challenging time, particularly outside Scandinavia.
The polar night through the eyes of Aniek Lith, alpinist and climber from the Netherlands, Kari Schiebevaag, kite-surf world champion and outdoor enthusiast and Espen Nordahl, guide book author and mountain guide.
